Description
GERMANY RARE 1945 Post-WWII Soviet Zone Local Overprint over Hitler on Real Photo Post Card This deep red "hammer and siecle" overprint is rare and is fitting for the Soviet Zone. Because of a complete lack of any alternative postage, the German "Hitler head" issues were used for several months after the end of the war, and in the Soviet Zone through the end of 1945. These overprints were as much a political statement as a need to proclaim that they were being used in a new post-war age. It is unknown who or where this was produced, and there is no documentation to accompany this item. Although the hammer and siecle design was used, this specific design is uncommon and the first we've seen. Please view all photographs provided here.
