For collectors of rare government letters/ stamps, here is an interesting note of receipt sent from the United States Internal Revenue in Connecticut to a manufacturing company in regards to a special tax. This receipt for special tax was sent to the Hunts Canfield Iron Co. in the town of Canaan, county of Litchfield in the state of Connecticut for the year ending May 1, 1868. This letter was dated at Bridgeport June 18, 1867 and signed by the Deputy Collector. It also was stamped with a 3 cent rose/ brown George Washington ungrilled stamp. The stamp has a black star shape cancellation mark. It was removed from the letter. There is a small hinge mark on the back of the stamp that matches the mark on the cover where it was affixed at one time. Note this piece came from the estate of a post master. I imagine he removed it to check for grill marks. Note there were many colors made of this stamp. I cannot be sure of color. Am describing as well as possible. The stamp itself is off center. It remains in good shape with no tears. The cover has a small tear at one end. The letter has a few tiny tear at the edges. I believe this to be the 1861 issue since there are no grill marks.
